Operation ALTAIR

CEFCOM / COMFEC BG 07.007 - November 1, 2007
Operation ALTAIR is the contribution of Canadian warships to the U.S.-led coalition fleet conducting anti-terrorist operations in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea under Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Her Majesty’s Canadian ships -- usually Halifax-class patrol frigates -- often deploy individually and are integrated into U.S. Navy carrier strike groups enroute to an area of operation. Deployments on Operation ALTAIR are about six months apart.
The naval presence expressed in Op ALTAIR not only demonstrates Canada’s continuing commitment to international security and the campaign against terrorism, it significantly enhances the interoperability of the Canadian and U.S. navies. Deployments on Op ALTAIR help keep Canada’s navy relevant, responsive, and effective in the new security environment.
Deployments
On November 1, 2007, HMCS Charlottetown left her home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, for a six-month deployment in the Persian Gulf region. Commanded by Commander Patrick St-Denis and with a crew of about 250 (including a CH-124 Sea King helicopter detachment), HMCS Charlottetown will conduct surveillance patrols and conduct maritime interdiction operations to help monitor maritime activity.
